ふさがる【塞がる】

1 〔閉じる〕 be closed; be blocked.

●まぶたがふさがる one's eyelids are shut tightly

・開いた口がふさがらない ⇒あいた² 1, あく 1⁴, くち.

●傷口はうまくふさがった. The wound closed nicely.

・道路工事の穴はまだふさがっていない. The holes from the roadwork have not yet been filled in.

・耳のピアスの穴がふさがってしまった. The hole in my pierced ears healed shut.

2 〔遮断される〕 be blocked [clogged].

●悲しみで胸のふさがる思い be choked with emotion.

●通路が荷物でふさがっている. The aisle is blocked with luggage.

・排水口が落ち葉でふさがっていた. The entrance to the drain is clogged with dead leaves.

3 〔空きがなくなる〕 be filled up; 〔余裕がなくなる〕 be completely occupied [taken up].

●このアパートは全室ふさがっている. All the units in this apartment are completely occupied.

・この貸店舗はまだふさがっていない. These retail spaces have not yet been rented.

・その会議室は 2 時から 5 時までふさがっている. This conference room will be occupied from two o'clock to five o'clock.

・隣の席はすでにふさがっていた. The seat next to me was already occupied [taken].

・今週は火曜と金曜がふさがっている. I'm completely booked up on Tuesday and Friday this week.

・その日はあいにくふさがっていてお目にかかれません. Unfortunately, I'm busy [《口》 tied up] that day, so I won't be able to meet you.

・今は手がふさがっている. I have my hands full right now.
